"The Lost City of the Incas"

Peru’s most famous tourist destination is without a doubt of Machu Picchu and a trip to Peru is not complete with a visit to this ancient Inca city. There are tons of companies that offer multiple treks, the most famous following the Inca Trail, which in the Peru Gringo’s opinion, and I think many will agree with me, is not the best route to go. Why? It is overcrowded, tougher terrain, and doesn’t have that great of scenery, not to mention the fact that you have to book a trip on that trail at least 4 months in advance.

An alternative route that I recommend to any wanting to trek to Machu Picchu is the Lares Peru6Trek, which passes through a different valley entirely, and gives you a look at local Andean villages and the people who live there. (SAS Travel provides some pretty good service and tour options.)

One of the highlights of the region is the mountains, so by doing a trek you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the sites of the area. If you can stay an extra night in Aguas Calientes, the access point to Machu Picchu, in order to enjoy a full day in the ancient city, it is definitely worth it; most visitors leave by noon so as not to have to stay another night, so you will have the whole site practically to yourself.
