From May to September 2008 Gallup Polls conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States. Obama received overwhelming support, being the preferred candidate by a ratio of nearly 4-1.
So what about Peru? Well, as the chart shows, 31% of all who were polled felt that Obama was the better choice, while 11% preferred to see McCain elected into office. The majority, however, didn’t know which United States President would be better for their country. (Which sounds a lot like the way people in the States are feeling as well.)
The people of Peru in general are not in fear of what the next US Presidential election will bring. Thirty-seven percent believe that the election will have no direct bearing on their country. Twenty-seven percent beg to differ, claiming the US election will make a difference and 36% are not sure.

But what is the real story? Peru is trying to turn things around, and a push in tourism is really what this country needs. Obama’s proposed aide to help alleviate poverty in Latin America could do Peru some good, but what if his tax reforms cause the wealthy to stop spending their vacation time in Peru? If McCain is able to manipulate the economy like he claims he can, will Peru be the next hotspot for North American travelers? Or, will Americans being dissatisfied with both Obama and McCain be looking to find refuge in another country? If that is the case, Peru might just see an influx of Americans looking to escape their own government, which could provide the push in economy Peru so desperately needs.

However, we think that Obama’s victory will affect negatively the Latinamerican left. Check our last blog post to know how.
