How do I get my American TV Programs on in Peru?

If you are looking to set up your TV programming in Peru, many chose to go with DirecTV, although there are some things to take into account when deciding how to go about getting all the programs you really want.DTV_3D_DIRECTV_WHITE

Some questions have arisen about whether or not you can use a receiver and an access card from the States to connect to your DirecTV packaging from Peru.

I am by no means an expert in this area, but from what I have read/been told there are a couple of problems with doing this; mainly that the DirecTV Latin America and the DirecTV USA run off of different satellites. This means that even if you used a USA card/receiver in a Latin American dish, it would need to be picking up its signal from the USA satellite, which is much farther away than the Latin American satellite. Again, not an expert, but I have heard of people getting a larger dish and doing some modification work to make it pick up the signal of the USA satellite. This option, is pretty much crazy because it would require such a huge dish, and even then you won’t get all the channels, nor will you get any local programs.

Another option is something called a Slingbox. It requires a strong and fast internet connection. You need a place to host your receiver in the States, which requires a spare TV/DirecTV receiver. That connect to the internet and then using the Slingbox software you can watch TV from your laptop or computer as if you were actually in the States, in front of the TV. If you hook up the TV end to a HD DVD recorder you can even record your favorite programs and watch them at your leisure in Peru.

The downside is that you need a fast download on your end, and a fast upload on the Stateside end (we’re talking cable internet here people, no less than 1 MB upload). Even the Speedy 900 internet in Peru isn’t fast enough to watch things full screen, especially sports. If you record the game on DVR and then watch the game during off peak hours it is a little better. It is kind of a bummer that you can only watch it on your computer, but for American programming it is the best that I have heard of.

If what you are looking for is the 100% NFL Sunday Ticket and other USA networks like Fox, CBS, NBC, and ABC then another option is to subscribe to Puerto Rico DirecTV and bring the receiver to Peru, order your DirecTV in Lima and change out the receiver.

You can always get the DirecTV packaging in Peru, but the programming isn’t exactly the same.

Peru’s DirecTV in itself gets a lot of complaints from NFL fans, as it only plays 3 of each weeks games, and it also gives spotty coverage to soccer, which has gotten a lot of Peruvians pretty riled up.

You are right about the Puerto Rico thing. It is possible I’ve seen it in action. This is exactly how The Corner gets their US programming. I just don’t know how I’d get a mailing address in Puerto Rico to setup on account there. Not to mention the expensive shipping costs of shipping the receiver down.

Hi, nice post, I am also interested in getting US content down here, I have been digging some methods and so far I have only found two that might work, the first involves hacking some satellites with FTA equipment, there is no way to hack US’s direct tv, but I think that it is possible with dish.

The other, which I actually tried is with peer to peer iptv, there are some apps which let you do this, most of them are asian, and is a pita to get some quality streams, and even if you get some, most of them are actually asian versions of US channels, tvants come to mind, but it has been a long time since I tried using them.

I am still interested in the first FTA method, Ive met some guys at paruro who do this stuff, but I didnt had the interest nor the money back then to actually try.

Do you know if it is possible to get two or more clients connected to a single sling box? I am not american, and know nobody who could set up a sling box for me, but if you already have one I am sure that there are people willing to give away some bucks in order to get their american tv dose!!
