Ever been snowboarding before? Well sandboarding is kind of the same except its way hotter and much sandier.
The most popular areas for sand boarding are Ica and Huacachina. A few hours from Lima this area offers the most variety in slopes. From beginner to experienced you can find whatever tickles your fancy. Here you can rent a board from most hotels for really cheap and do the self-guided thing and haul your board up and down the hill yourself or you can pay $10-$15USD for a two hour tour. The advantage of the tours is that a dune buggy will wait for you at the bottom and drive you back to the top every time. Really it’s well worth the money. Looking to book a tour? Click here.
Peru is even home to the highest sand dune in the world, Cerro Blanco. There are some spots suitable for beginners but this is mostly for experienced boarders. Some areas can’t be reached in the dune buggies so the hike up the hill can be quite strenuous. If you can do the hike the amazing view alone is worth the effort.
Sand boarding is huge in Peru, so much so that there are sand boarding competitions. Most recently Copa Sandboarding Peru was held last weekend from November 25-27.
Sandboarding is a hugely popular sport in Peru and it is great fun. The ride up the hill in the dune buggy is the start of the fun, followed by either some great runs down the hill or if you’re more like me lots of falling and rolling down the hill. Either way, this is loads of fun.
Take some time out of your routine or your Peru vacation and do something totally out of the ordinary! Go Sandboarding , have fun and brag to all your friends about it.
