A Run For The Border

A Run For The Border

I always get a bit stressed going to the border to renew my Visa. It never seems to come at a good time. When I get to my destination, usually Copacabana, I can never really relax 100% because, in the back of my mind, I’m wondering how many days I’ll get this time.

This last trip was no exception, although for slightly different reasons. This time, the problem came from protesting between Puno and the Bolivian border. I’d heard about protests in Ica on the way to Lima. But it was a complete surprise when my bus stopped before even getting to the fork in the road where the right branch goes to Desaguadero and La Paz while the left Read more

How does Peru feel about Obama's Election?

President Alan Garcia is quoted as saying:

We have followed this presidential campaign with interest and admiration, as it has shown the vigor of democracy in the United States and the majority of the U.S population has supported your message of change and hope. We are sure that your leadership and political convictions will be decisive so that the international community will find a responsible and equitable way out of the crisis that is affecting world finances and economy.

We are equally assured that during your term our bilateral relation will continue to strengthen. The vigorous entrance into the Free Trade Agreement, which you supported and used as an example during your campaign, will serve to energize business and investment, Read more

Young Latin America Speaks out on United States Presidential Election

This post comes as a follow-up to the last one on the affect of the U.S. Presidential elections in Peru and throughout Latin America.

The López Rafaschieri twins believe that the election of Barack Obama into office will negatively affect the radical Lefts in Latin America. (Is that a bad thing?)

Despite the fact that Obama is everything the Leftists are hoping for (mainly he is not a neoconservative, nor McCain) the Twins claim that he will oppose the Latin American radical Left in a different way, that will be just as detrimental. It would mean their being criticized by someone who was able to rise above extreme obstacles and achieve his goals in a democratic environment. Read more

Obama or McCain… Which is Better for Peru?

From May to September 2008 Gallup Polls conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States. Obama received overwhelming support, being the preferred candidate by a ratio of nearly 4-1.

So what about Peru? Well, as the chart shows, 31% of all who were polled felt that Obama was the better choice, while 11% preferred to see McCain elected into office. The majority, however, didn’t know which United States President would be better for their country. (Which sounds a lot like the way people in the States are feeling as well.)

Peru's Real Estate Market

Ever since 2006 when Peru had the best stock market performance in the world, with an amazing gain of 182 per cent, Peru has been receiving more and more attention by the media for its business prospects. Property prices have managed to remain low, due largely in part to the lack of attention it has received as a country to make major investments in.

However, Doron Weisbarth of Lima Real Estate tells us that at the current time investments in Peru are low risk and have the chance of a good return. “A severe housing shortage and short construction cycles ensure strong prices, easy sales and quick returns,” Weisbarth said.
